Links and News for February 14-20, 2010
It’s been an interesting week! The big news this week (for me, at least) had to do with the mass firings of bloggers at b5media. They let go of their entire entertainment channel without notice to the bloggers. (I was one of them.) What’s worse? Rumors are everywhere saying the firings aren’t done yet. So the rest of us are now waiting to be fired based on everything we hear from everyone else except the company. Nice.
All the more reason to apply for something new. Which I did yesterday. One of the jobs (that I even listed here) turned out to be revenue share only. They wanted four articles a week (and wanted writers to sign an agreement to that fact) while saying they couldn’t possibly guarantee pay. Why advertise paying writing positions then? It’s a reminder to always be leery when applying for freelance writing jobs. Read between the lines when it comes to ads, and be cautious before you sign anything. On that note, here are some news and links you might enjoy:
- Tiger Woods made an apology this week for his behavior. I liked what he said about a true apology being not words but his behavior going forward. For all us wordsmiths, it reminds us that words are also as important as the action behind them.
- The National Enquirer, that magazine that used to mean make-up journalism, is now in the running for a Pulitzer. I’ve noticed that lately when they report a scandal, they seem to be right. Has the magazine completely re-done its image?
- Are you on Facebook? Working Writers is! Facebook has now become the second most popular site online.
- Authors are always looking for reviewers, and here’s a list of them on Twitter. Tweet away!
- Speaking of Twitter, are you looking for a list of Olympians on the site? Here they are!
- I’m doing a virtual tour in April for my book 21 Simple Things You Can Do To Help Someone With Diabetes
