For the Love of Writing
Guest post by Jennee Thompson
If there is one thing that I love to write about, it is my love for writing. In fact, when I first discovered that I treasured writing as a hobby, most of the time I found myself putting on paper, in grave detail, all about the joy that I had found in my hobby. It took me a little while to get beyond that point and expand on to other topics that I enjoy writing about. But I got there.
It seems a little silly though, doesn’t it? Writing about writing? And I’m not talking about grammatical errors or do’s and do not’s, but the pleasure found in jotting down words, one letter at a time. Having that desire to explain with your own words the emotions you feel when you read words that were once in your head and are now on paper or just the way a pen feels in your hand or a notebook filled with brilliant sentences is the core to being a writer.
Writing is a very magical event when you fully give yourself into the moment. Just like a music sucks you in to a realm you have never been before, writing can let you escape to the depths of your imagination.
Writing is exotic, addictive and fulfilling until the day comes that you completely lose the inspiration that kept your brain spinning all night. You fidget with ideas that once seemed incredible and suddenly they have become the worst ideas known to mankind. Writer’s block has taken control and as a writer, you feel stuck.
One of my favorite movies is Finding Forrester. It is about a young black man, Jamal, that has an incredible talent and desire to write but he’s lifestyle won’t create opportunity for him to pursue his dream. He manages to befriend William Forrester, a famous author played by Sean Connery. In my favorite scene, Forrester gives Jamal the only advice that writers should give out.
“No thinking – that comes later. You must write your first draft with your heart. You rewrite with your head. The first key to writing is… to write, not to think! “
(And if you have never seen it before, add it to your Netflix list)
Just write.
Small words can sometimes seem so insignificant, but these little words are the most powerful. If your pen and notebook is haunting you from the lack of affection it is receiving, just write. If your word document is blank except for the blinking line, then just write. If your mind is blank, with no inspiration or topic to dive into, just write.
Release what is inside of you, let go and just write. In the end, it’s almost like the article or story has miraculously written itself, and then you get to go do the editing. (And usually you are shaking your head, saying, “I wrote this? Wow!”)

This is another quote I love from the movie… “Yeah, and what’s the reason in having a file cabinet full of writing and keeping the s*** locked so nobody can read it?”
I have plenty locked up for no one to read and I’m working on changing that.
Thanks again Cherie!
