Gift Ideas for Writers
I love this time of year, not just because of the gift giving, but also because it allows me to take stock in my freelance business. This year I put some things on my Christmas list that will help get and keep new clients. If you’re looking for some gift ideas yourself, here are a few of them.
Okay, am I the only one on the planet who doesn’t have one of these yet? I put this at the top of my Christmas list because I think it will really add something to my websites and blogs. Do you have one? If not, drop a subtle hint to Santa.
They say gift certificates are lame gifts, but I really like them. One year my mom got me a $100 gift certificate to Starbucks and I just loved it. I went there with my laptop, had a latte, and wrote. For some reason, I hesitate going there when I don’t have that free money in my pocket! Heading out to somewhere like Starbucks can help you stay focused during rough projects simply because the venue is different. I like it because I’m a sucker for people watching.
Offers to Help
A lot of people work from home because they want to be with their kids, take care of their health, or some other reason. Working from home doesn’t mean that you don’t need help, though. That’s why a homemade gift certificate with an offer to help babysit, clean, or even do paperwork is an awesome gift.
Again, I think I might be the only one without one of these. I need to get with the times. I didn’t ask for this specifically, but I did drop some hints to DH that I need to get a new phone for myself after the holidays.
Memberships
Sometimes writers have a problem spending money on things like business memberships or clubs. Even though these things may help them reach out to other writers and also get new clients. We’re frugal as freelancers, aren’t we? I know I rarely crack open my pocket book. That’s why I’d love it if someone paid for a business membership for me. I could meet potential new clients and have a great excuse to leave the house and network.
The latest MacBook is about $950 on Amazon, weighs under five pounds and is just 1.08 inches thick. Wow. What I could do with this! I know, I know, it would take an awfully nice Santa to give me this, but I can’t help thinking of how it could improve my working life. I could take it anywhere and it would be easy to lug, it fits on a little bistro table nicely (or even on the plane) and it’s super cool. Yes, I want one. How about you?
New Clients
Hey, not every present needs to be wrapped. How about giving a referral to your favorite freelancer? Getting new clients is one of the best gifts of all!
What do you most want for the holidays this year?

Ha! Yes, me too! I’m sure Santa reads this blog, so that’s a good thing.
