Interview: Francine Rivers

Francine Rivers has published several bestselling novels with Christian themes. She’s received the combination of recognition that most writers dream about: critical acclaim and reader loyalty. She also has an interesting story about coming to faith.

On Francine’s website she says that her “Christian novels have been awarded or nominated for numerous awards including the Rita Award, the Christy Award, the ECPA Gold Medallion, and the Holt Medallion in Honor of Outstanding Literary Talent. In 1997, after winning her third Rita award for Inspirational Fiction, Francine was inducted into the Romance Writers’ of America Hall of Fame.”

Wow.

Enjoy this interview.

I like the fact that you have your testimony on your website. How has your faith changed your writing since you became born again?

Everything I write now is centered on Jesus. Many books start with a question about faith or an issue with which I’m struggling. The writing has become a way of drawing close to the Lord and finding answers. The characters “voice” various points of view, but there is always one person of strong and/or growing faith who is on the quest.

On your website you ask writers, “Are going to be a “Christian writer” or a Christian who writes?” Should writers keep this in mind before they draft their novels?

Yes. If you are going to be a Christian writer, Jesus needs to be at the center of your work. The characters’ relationship with Jesus is the focus of the book.

Tell us about your latest book.

My latest books are Her Mother’s Hope (Marta’s Legacy)Contemporary Literature) and Her Daughter’s Dream (Marta’s Legacy)Contemporary Literature).

What’s next for you?

I’m writing a proposal for a new book right now. It will be about the love of a father for his adopted daughter.

What’s the most interesting book you’ve ever read?

That’s easy! The Bible! I’ve read the Bible every year for two decades and still discovering new things. The wonderful thing about Scripture is it is new every time you read it. God speaks to you right where you are. It is truly living word able to change your thinking and your life. .

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

I’m reading, watching movies, taking long walks, traveling.

In your opinion, what’s the measure of a successful writer?

One who keeps growing.

Where can we learn more about you?

www.francinerivers.com I blog and write earth psalms about my life and what I observe in nature that teaches me about God.
