I love featuring poets and poetry here and have often said that the world needs more. Poetry gets a bad rap sometimes, don’t you think? The best way to encourage poetry is to keep reading until you find a poet or poem you love, then talk about it, tell others… poetry brightens our world in such rich ways.
If you’re looking for where to start with poetry, I’ve got a few of my favorites that I shared on my personal blog a few years ago. These included: The Complete Collected Poems of Maya Angelou and Phenomenal Woman: Four Poems Celebrating Women (but really, anything by her is great), The Prophet (A Borzoi Book) (which I thought I’d never like but is really outstanding), The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson, Ten Poems to Change Your Life (which is a really nice collection with commentary by Roger Housden, The Poetry of Robert Frost, anything anything anything by Mary Oliver! For my list by then I chose Why I Wake Early: New Poems and New and Selected Poems, Volume One. This year I got Blue Horses: Poems for Christmas and loved that, too.
I also recommended Poetry Speaks, which contains CDs with poets reading their work. I just sat and listened to it one day years ago (got it as a birthday present from my hubby!) and it was so wonderful. And since I wrote that list, I’ve add Rumi to my collection, and would highly recommend The Essential Rumi, New Expanded Edition
Here are some of Amazon’s poetry bestsellers. One of these is sure to resonate with you.
