Most freelancers I know work like crazypeople. (Myself included.) It’s not that we always have to, but we really seem to want to. Plus, if you want to be a successful freelancer, you really do need to learn to work hard and treat your work as a business.

However, there is a lot to be said for doing nothing. As a writer, you are not only running a business but tapping your creative energies as well. That’s why I love this quote from Lillian Hellman.

“You do too much. Go and do nothing for a while. Nothing.”
― Lillian Hellman

Take a tip from Ms. Hellman and do nothing once in a while. See how it changes your outlook and output.

A Good Book Makes the Day Better

Most people that read this blog are writers, but don’t you think most writers are also readers? I sure do. That’s why I really liked this quote, from Kathleen Norris.

I usually have a “to be read” pile that is miles high! I like to have a variety right next to my bed, so I can pick and choose my books depending on what mood I’m in. I think enjoying a variety of books can help you grow and also help you as a writer. They say that writers read differently than the average person, and I really believe this. I think we instinctively look at things like voice and dialog.

So tell me, do you agree with this quote:

If it’s one thing that irritates me, it is writers who do not help each other. Writers, please, we are all in this together! It doesn’t help you to put down other writers, trash their work, or try and sabotage them. It really doesn’t. To that end, I found this excellent quote:

If there is one thing writers need to do consistently, it’s write. Not talk about writing, but putting a pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) and putting words down. That’s why I really liked this quote from Ben Franklin:

“Well done is better than well said.”

Do you know of writers who talk about writing more than they actually write? Are you one of them? I think we all need to be reminded that there will never be a good time to write, we just have do it everyday and make the time.

I have to admit, I’m not such a huge fan of Woody Allen‘s movies, but as a writer, I admire his longevity. I also saw this quote from him that I think is very applicable to writers:

“Eighty percent of success is showing up.”

This quote makes me think of the freelancing life, where part of the success is simply being out there and not giving up. Building clients and a successful business can take time, and having the confidence to just “show up” is part of the battle.
