The brilliant Frank McCourt talks about poverty and writing at length about his upbringing. If you’ve never heard the beautiful Irish voice of Mr. McCourt, you are in for a treat. Imagine this same voice telling you a story of his childhood, and that is Angela’s Ashes.

What a talent that passed from us this past weekend. Frank McCourt, author of Angela’s Ashes, Teacher Man, and ‘Tis, passed away on July 19th.

I first read Angela’s Ashes: A Memoir with a book group, which, if you aren’t a member of a book group, this is a great reason to join one. You get to chat about the book and the author and give it some real attention. How often do we get to do that when we finish a work we love? The book group talked about how brilliant his writing was. Frank McCourt didn’t just tell us a sad story about his upbringing, he told a story filled with hope.

His third book was Teacher Man: A Memoir, and it was about his time teaching roughly 10,000 kids over the years in the New York school system. I think it’s only fitting then, that his students return the favor. Three of them have published letters in the Times about the passing of Frank McCourt. I think he would have approved that perhaps his biggest legacy is touching the lives of so many students over the years.
