I’ve been a fan of Elinor Lipman’s for quite a while. I’ve also had the privilege of meeting her in person at a few author appearances at one of the now defunct Harry Schwartz bookstores. She is as delightful in person as she appears to be from her writing.
Now, here’s the thing about books. I love them. So much so, that I could put entire family into the poor house if I were to buy them at the rate I wanted. There is nothing like sitting down with a brand new book and diving in to your favorite author’s words. Ahh……
But I often frequent used bookstores, not because I don’t want to give authors royalties (because I believe they deserve them! Yes they do!) but because I, myself, am a poor writer. I’m not starving, but the words “working writer” often mean that you need to be frugal. I am.
This time, however, I bought the brand new, hardcover beautiful edition of Elinor’s The Family Man.
I’m already halfway through, and what a treat it is. As soon as you open those first few pages, you’ll soon be transported by her wonderful sense of voice. Funny, charming, sweet… all rolled into one. I can’t say enough about it. I love the characters (as usual!) and highly recommend it.
Which brings me to the other point of my post. I’m all for used book shopping, but every once in a while it’s nice to reward your favorite author by purchasing one of their books brand spankin’ new. So go out and buy a book today!
